Buying a two wheeler – know all the documents required

Buying anything new is always a just cause for celebration; especially when it is something exciting like a car, a bike or a home. With the congested traffic conditions in big cities, a bike often proves to be a great investment. Bikes are compact in size, can zip through traffic easily and can be parked in tiny spaces. It is no wonder that more and more people today are opting to purchase two wheelers as opposed to four wheelers. Whether you are planning to purchase a brand new bike or a used one, you have to provide certain documents. Here is a list of documents required for bike registration

Bike registration documents

  • 2 passport size photographs
  • Attested photocopy of your ID proof – You can provide photocopies of any government registered documents bearing your photo on it. Accepted documents include your PAN Card, Driver’s License, Aadhaar Card, Passport or Voter ID Card.
  • Attested photocopy of your Address proof – You must provide photocopies of any government recognised document with your permanent address mentioned on it. Accepted documents include your Passport, Aadhaar Card, and Driver’s License. In case you do not have any of these documents, you can also provide attested photocopies of your Ration Card, Electricity bill, Telephone landline bill (BSNL or MTNL), House Tax Receipt from Corporation or Index II documents.

Note that you need to provide all the original documents of your address and ID proof for verification when you register for the vehicle

Bike Documents required in case of a loan

Since a vehicle is not just your average purchase, some people opt to purchase a scooter or bike by taking out a loan. In such a case, the buyer must provide certain additional documents to the lender, along with the above mentioned documents required for bike registration. These depend upon the type of borrower one is i.e. a salaried individual or a self-employed individual.

A salaried individual taking out a bike loan must provide the following documents

  • 2 Passport size photographs
  • ID proof documents from the above mentioned list
  • Address proof documents from the above mentioned list
  • Income proof documents – Salary slips of the last three months
  • Bank statements of the last three months
  • Salary certificate or form 16

Documents for bike registration for self-employed individuals

  • 2 Passport size photographs
  • ID proof documents from the above mentioned list
  • Address proof documents from the above mentioned list
  • Income proof documents – Income Tax returns of the last 3 years
  • Bank statements of the last 3-6 months, depending upon the lender

Bike registration documents

When you purchase a new two-wheeler, you must apply for its registration within a period of 7 days from the date of receiving the delivery of the vehicle. To this effect, you need to provide the following documents for bike registration.

  • A filled up application form i.e. Form no. 20. The form can be procured from any registering authority office in all states across the country.
  • Original sales certificate form i.e. Form no. 21 supplied by your vehicle dealer at the time of the delivery of your bike.
  • Certificate of road worthiness i.e. Form no. 22 supplied by the bike manufacturing company, also available with the vehicle dealer and handed over to the buyer at the time of the delivery of the bike.
  • Attested photocopy of a valid vehicle insurance certificate
  • Customs clearance certificate in case the bike is imported
  • Chassis Pencil Print
  • Challan Receipt
  • Affidavit on ₹3 non-judicial stamp paper
