But new-age technology and connectivity tools today have changed the way insurance products are sold across the world, with a classic example being the Health Insurance Premium Calculator.

The online Health Insurance Premium Calculator is essentially an online tool that not only helps you calculates the ideal sum insured for you and your family, but also compiles a list of suitable health insurance plans along with their respective features and premium amount. This helps you in making an informed choice without leaving the comfort of your homes.

Factors Affecting Health Insurance Premium

Understanding features and benefits of a health policy is generally easy. The difficult part is estimating the premium you would be paying for those benefits as that varies from person to person.
Before you decide to purchase any policy, Liberty General Insurance would inform you about the premium you would be expected to pay every year for availing the benefits of that policy. Here’s a look at some of the key factors that affect the amount of health insurance premium:

(1) Age :- Your age is the first and the most crucial factor that affects the insurance premiums you have to pay. Generally, you are healthier when you are younger, say in your twenties or thirties, than in your forties, and later in life. If you buy insurance when you are in your 20s or 30s, you end up paying a considerably lower premium, than if you buy when you are older. This is also because, filing a claim are lower when you are younger, and they increase as you begin to age. Also, age brings with it new morbidities, which further enhance your chances of filing a claim.

(2) Personal health history :- Liberty General Insurance may conduct medical check-ups before issuing health insurance policies in some cases, based on the sum insured and the age of the person. But, in any case, it would take into account a person’s health, his/her family medical history, congenital disorders, personal habits such as drinking, smoking etc., at the time of fixing health insurance premiums.
Applicants with pre-existing ailments, tobacco users, smokers, etc., would be at a higher risk and would more likely file a claim in comparison to someone who does not have any medical issue or is a non-smoker, etc. So, premiums may increase significantly in such cases.

(3) Claim-free years :- Your insurance premium amounts would not change based on whether or not you have filed claims over the past few years. Your premium would only increase as you age and cross-over into a new age bracket. Typically, if you do not file any insurance claim in a given year, depending on the product, Liberty General Insurance will increase your basic sums insured by 10% for each claim free year, for up to 10 consecutive years, where your sum assured can increase to 100%. For instance, if you bought a policy with a sum assured of Rs. 300,000 in 2016 and filed no claims until 2027, your sum assured would increase to Rs. 600,000, while your premium would remain the same. However, this also contingent on you remaining in the same age bracket during that time.
However, it should be noted that, as you begin to age, your premiums will also keep increasing steadily, as per a predefined age bracket set by LGI. For example, you may end up paying the same premium between the ages of 40-45, and your premium will increase when you enter the next age bracket (even if you have not filed any claims), and so on.

(4) Coverage :- Higher the coverage – either in terms of sum insured or in terms of the number of benefits covered, higher would be the premium amount. Also, the premium increases if your health insurance plan includes your immediate family members like your spouse, children or parents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.1. Is it mandatory to have health insurance in India?

icon

A) Buying health insurance is not mandatory for Indian citizens as per law. But given the current environment, when disease prevalence in Indian population is on a rise and healthcare costs are running extremely high, it is highly recommended to have health insurance in order to protect you and your family from financial burden in times of medical emergencies.

Q.2. Should I still buy a health policy if I already have one from my employer?

icon icon

A) It is important to know that your employers cover your medical expenses only as long as you are in their services. As soon as you quit or retire, the policy ceases to exist and you are left with no medical cover if you don’t have any personal health insurance policy. Also, the health insurance plan by your employer may not provide you and your family adequate cover, and you will have to bear the costs exceeding the sums insured. So, it is advisable that you invest in your own health insurance plan, so that you are always covered. Insure you buy an adequate personal health insurance plan with a high sum assured.

Q.3. Is the premium exempted from Income Tax?

icon icon

A) Yes, the premium paid for health insurance policies qualifies for deduction under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act.

  • An amount of up to Rs 25,000 of premium paid for self, spouse and children are exempted.
  • Additional deduction of Rs 25,000 for covering parents is allowed if they are under the age of 60 years.
  • If parents are Senior Citizens, aged 60 years and above, you can claim deductions of up to Rs.50,000.
  • If you are above 60 years and paying the insurance premiums of your parents, you can claim annual deductions of up to Rs.100,000 against health insurance premiums

You can choose from individual health policies, family floater health insurance plans, policies with additional financial covers over the existing sums insured, and comprehensive health insurance plans covering a wide range of treatments, including hospitalisation, day care and OPD. Though, you might have to pay for some non-medical expenses or expenses that are not covered under the policy.
Note that Liberty General Insurance provides cashless facilities only at the hospitals which are in its network. You can simply visit the Health 360 Network Hospitals Locator Page on our website and input the name of your state, city, and Pin code to check the hospitals where you can seek cashless treatment.

Q.6.What is the maximum number of claims allowed during a policy year?

icon icon

A) Policyholders can make any number of claims during the health insurance policy period unless a specific cap is prescribed in any of the policies. However, the sum insured under the health insurance plan is the maximum amount you can claim.

This is a lovely example of ''OUT OF THE BOX'' thinking at LGI as Dr. Liji has physically examined the boy after discussing the matter with Dr. Asha and Hemlata madam instead of compelling him to go for X-Ray/MRI. Parents of the boy appreciated the way proposal was tackled as parents and the consulting doctor were not of the opinion of taking X-Ray/MRI of the young boy, as he was fit post hospitalization.
